Democracy betrayed by Europe

Article Abstract:

The Democratic Party government of Albanian president Sali Berisha has received extensive support from the international community, especially the European Union. However, it is now the subject of strong protests from ordinary Albanians following systematic fraud in the recent election. If the international community fails to recognise the result of the vote, then the government could be forced to hold another election. If other countries do not react at all, then they would in effect be giving their support to the collapse of democracy in Albania.

Icy grip of fear returns to haunt Albanian streets

Article Abstract:

There is currently widespread repression of ordinary people in Albania. The government admits that 247 people have been arrested following recent riots, with 72 having been committed to trial, but there is evidence that police activity is much more extensive than this. There are unconfirmed reports that the latest prisoners are being detained in sewers and underground military tunnels. Problems have particularly resulted from the collapse of the country's pyramid investment schemes.

Fear and fury after Albania's sham election

Article Abstract:

The recent general election in Albania resulted in a strong victory for the Democratic Party of president Sali Berisha. This follows extensive intimidation of representatives and supporters of the opposition Socialist Party and Democratic Alliance. International election observers have made claims of widespread vote-rigging, and this has brought condemnation from some European political parties.
