Watching and waiting for Deng

Article Abstract:

Deng Xiaoping formally retreated from public life in China in 1989, giving up all his political positions. He is now likely to die fairly soon, but no official information has been given about the true state of his health, leading to much speculation. Officials are saying that his death will not have a political impact, because the 'third generation' of leaders is now in full control. However, many observers believe that the political scene is not as stable as leaders are trying to portray it.

In search of Deng's successor

Article Abstract:

The Chinese Communist party remains in a strong position, but the impending death of Deng Xiaoping, the country's last revolutionary leader, has sparked off a period of transition and instability. The official line is that power is now held by the 'third generation,' senior figures who did not play a leading role in the 1949 revolution. The most prominent of these people is Jiang Zemin, who is president and head of the Communist party.
