Diamond mystery of the Great Train Robbery

Article Abstract:

A large quantity of uncut diamonds went missing from the Glasgow-Euston train which was involved in the Great Train Robbery of Aug 1963, according to Ronnie Biggs, one of the gang responsible. He now lives in exile in Rio de Janeiro, and has recently released his first novel, 'Keep on Running.' In this, he claims that one of the gang members who was never caught got away with around half the diamonds being carried on the train, possibly worth more than the 2.6 million pounds sterling in cash which was stolen from the train.

Mitterrand's mischief backfires

Article Abstract:

President Francois Mitterrand's referendum on the Maastricht treaty may misfire as the 'no' vote increases unexpectedly. The Conte de Paris stated his objections to the Maastricht Treaty and many in Mr Jacques Chirac's RPR party support the 'no' vote. Mr Philippe Seguin, a Gaullist, opposes the treaty and debates the issues with Pres Mitterand on 3 Sep 1992. France believes in the single market and the European Monetary System but the treaty removes links between French institutions and French citizens.
