Disquiet on the home front

Article Abstract:

Mixed views are being expressed about the prospects for the UK property market. It is clear that property sales are slowing down, but this does not necessarily mean that the property market will enter a period of recession. Some observers believe that the market could merely be seeing the beginning of a more stable period, moving away from excessive rises in house prices. Mortgage lenders are being extremely cautious, hoping that this will protect them from having to deal with large numbers of arrears.

Why, Mr Darcy. You're black

Article Abstract:

The Photographers' Gallery in London, England, will from Feb 6, 1999, exhibit the work of the five photographers shortlisted for the 1999 Citibank Photography Prize. The most disturbing photographs are those by Paul M. Smith, who plays a central role in his own work. This is also the case with Yinka Shonibare. The other shortlisted photographers are Rineke Dijkstra, Alex Hartley and Augusto Alves da Silva. Hartley and da Silva both manipulate the onlooker's sense of location.
