Do women get a fair chance?

Article Abstract:

Many female solicitors feel that they do not have the same career opportunities as their male counterparts, according to a recent survey into sex discrimination in the legal profession. Most do not believe that the situation will improve, and this is particularly worrying, according to Clare McGlynn, vice-chair of the Young Women Lawyers Group. It may be that law firms do not really actively discriminate against women, but that they fail to make it clear that they value their female staff.

When justice is blinded by science

Article Abstract:

Prosecuting lawyers often assume forensic evidence is infallible, but errors do occur. Police forces use the cheapest services, which may not be the most reliable. Forensic Access, a company which provides forensic science services to defence lawyers, states that evidence may include opinion in addition to fact. The Law Society wishes the Royal Commission to provide a system of recognised qualifications and standards for forensic scientists.

Article Abstract:

The Law Society organises media survival courses for solicitors. They learn how to use the media advantageously. Solicitors' public image can be improved by good media interviews. Mock recordings are made and criticised. Make-up and mannerisms have to be dealt with. The trainees have difficulty remembering the points they wish to make. They are advised to avoid jargon and metaphors.
