Does Frank Dobson need to have his head examined?

Article Abstract:

UK Secretary of State for Health Frank Dobson has taken a very brave step in admitting that it is not appropriate to discharge more mentally ill people from hospitals into community-based care. He is also showing political courage in planning to establish new forms of residential care for the mentally ill. Spending more on treating the mentally ill, and therefore less on other types of medical care, will inevitably be a very sensitive issue. Dobson will have to be aware that there will never be any easy answers to caring for the mentally ill.

'The sort of education I had may not survive....' (avoiding social exclusiveness in United Kingdom education system)(Column)

Article Abstract:

The UK has a long tradition of running some educational establishments that deliberately avoid social exclusiveness. The Assisted Places Scheme, for example, has allowed many children from poor families to be educated at establishments from which they would otherwise have been excluded. However, the new Labour government is now phasing out this scheme in order to make additional funds available for primary education. The future of Keble College, Oxford, England, which has also sought to avoid social exclusiveness, is also under threat.

Road to hell: from a childhood in care to death on the streets

Article Abstract:

There is now widespread awareness in the UK of how people can drift into homeless, particularly if they are put into care as a child. Homelessness is still a serious problem, especially as the homeless have very high levels of ill-health and suicide. However, there are many charities and voluntary organizations seeking to help the homeless. Recent initiatives have included the opening of a 'wet shelter' for homeless street drinkers in the East End of London, England.
