Don't criticise 'victimvision' - that's where people really are themselves

Article Abstract:

The UK Independent Television Commission has expressed concern about the growth in the number of confessional television programmes, where there is a danger of people being exploited. It is true that raw emotion is not very tasteful, and there are some people who would rather not see people expose themselves emotionally on television. However, it is also possible to argue that sensitive issues should be discussed openly, as this allows people to realize that many others share their problems.

The first casualty of television's ratings war is too often the truth

Article Abstract:

Television broadcasters are competing fiercely to attract viewers, and this can sometimes mean that they abandon their sense of reason. This seems to have been the case with the 'Tailwind scandal,' in which CNN claimed that the US had used the nerve gas sarin during the Vietnam war. This allegation turned out to be untrue, and three producers have now been dismissed or have resigned. This scandal offers a valuable reminder of the dangers that can arise when strong emphasis is placed on ratings.
