It's not like that in our school, Jimmy

Article Abstract:

Jimmy McGovern's television series 'Hearts and Minds' faithfully portrays some aspects of life in a comprehensive school in a deprived community. However, it differs in some ways from the reality of school life. Classes are always much larger than those shown in the series, schools do not generally vigorously select the best pupils in the way portrayed and children are not usually as confrontational or negative as those shown by McGovern.

If they eat junk, they'll flunk

Article Abstract:

Children who eat a lot of junk food and drink a lot of fizzy drinks can often have a much shorter attention span than children who have a healthier diet, and can therefore start to fall behind in their education. In some cases, the quality of life of intelligent children can be ruined simply because of their poor diet. They can suffer health problems such as migraines and insomnia, and are usually very disruptive in the classroom.
