Drivers face random searches at nationwide police road-blocks

Article Abstract:

Starting in 1995 the UK police began a practice of stopping vehicles at random in order to check that they were road worthy. Called Operation Mermaid it was found to be so successful that they are to repeat the practice on a nationwide scale in August 1998. However, this time vehicle occupants are also to be checked to see if they are illegal immigrants or if they are smuggling alcohol. Checks will also be made to see if any of those stopped are social security fraudsters. The nature of such a random operation has been attacked by civil liberties groups.

UK: CAR MANUFACTURERS CRITICISED BY CA

Article Abstract:

The Consumers' Association (CA) has criticised car manufacturers for wasting the opportunity provided by the introduction of new X-registration cars and new pricing regulations, to introduce widespread price reductions. It claimed that buyers were being confused by manufacturers introducing cash backs, reductions and bogus price cuts on cars with reduced specifications, and labelled some of the offers as marketing gimmicks.
