Drug squad for 'Fortress Europe.' (clampdown on crime as internal borders opened)

Article Abstract:

The European Community has agreed on a new anti-drug group, improved coordination of money laundering operations and the establishment of a study on racist attack. The most important of these measures is the Europol Drugs Unit to be formed as soon as a location is agreed. These announcements are part of a strategy known as 'Fortress Europe', raising barriers to external countries while removing internal barriers. The Danish justice minister Erling Olsen says that these compensatory measures are needed to combat the utter ruthlessness of the drug lords and mafia.

The long-term future for hatred in Europe

Article Abstract:

Increased support for right-wing parties in recent elections throughout Europe is seen as an indication that there could be long-term racist threats in the making. Increased emphasis on national and regional identity within Europe is likely to lead to intolerance and new outsiders could be discriminated against. The European Community intends that greater autonomy will be given to regions, devolving authority. Ethnic problems may well be driven to the surface by this.

Future of Europe in the balance

Article Abstract:

The French referendum on the Maastricht treaty is probably irrelevant to European integration since the crisis in the foreign exchange on Sep 16 92. The currencies of France, Belgium and the Netherlands survived to become closely connected with the German Bundesbank. The pound sterling was removed from the European Monetary System (EMS), the lira has been devalued and the peseta is weak. The aim of monetary union may collapse through lack of confidence.
