Dutch killing reopens files on traffickers

Article Abstract:

Klaas Bruinsma was a Dutch hashish smuggler, known as the Preacher, who was assassinated in June 1991, but whose international narcotics trafficking continues to be a problem in Europe. Rotterdam harbour is thought to be a major transit place for drugs coming from Pakistan and the Middle East. Sales in Britain and Sweden bring higher profits: the Central Detective Information Service (CRI) reports that a kilo of hash is worth 2,000 pounds sterling in London, two or three times more than its value in Amsterdam. CRI figures show that 74,000kg of hashish was seized by police in the Netherlands during 1991 but drug trafficking continues to flourish.

Dutch spirits rise with a watery sun

Article Abstract:

The heavy rain which has caused flooding in large parts of the Netherlands now seems to have stopped, and swollen rivers are starting to recede. As long as the weather remains favourable, rivers could now go down by as much as half a metre a day for the next week. However, flood waters remain high, and there is still danger from the pressure of water piled up behind dikes.
