EUROPE: BOEING SAYS AIRBUS AID IS ILLEGAL

Article Abstract:

The president of US aircraft manufacturer Boeing, Harry Stonecipher, said 11 April 2000 that the aid provided by governments to Airbus members for the development of the new A3XX super jumbo jet is illegal. The main contention is that governments can only provide 33% of aid if the project is commercially viable. Boeing claims that the A3XX programme is not viable as it forecasts demand for only 400 super jumbos over the next 20 years compared to the Airbus forecast of 1,300. Boeing also questioned the need for aid when the Airbus consortium members are all profitable companies.

EUROPE: QUESTIONS OVER PLANS FOR AIRBUS FUNDING

Article Abstract:

The proposed funding of the new 555-seater A3XX Airbus superjumbo by the UK and Germany has come under question from the US. Germany, the UK and France have stated their intention of offering government funds to support the US$ 12bn project, a move which has revived US concerns over the financing of the Airbus consortium. US Trade Representative Charlene Barshefsky has asked for details of the funding, in order to examine whether it is in accordance with the rules of the World Trade Organisation.

UK: BAE FIGHTS FOR GOVERNMENT AID

Article Abstract:

BAe Systems, formerly British Aerospace, which has a 20% holding in Airbus, is trying to negotiate a favourable borrowing rate with the government for the A3XX super jumbo, due to launch next year. The German and French members of the consortium are both to receive state aid for the project which some believe to be risky with demand over-anticipated.
