Election fever splits French cabinet

Article Abstract:

The French government is being split apart by policy differences in the run-up to the presidential election. Rivals plot to deny Balladur the crown

Article Abstract:

Frnch prime minister Edouard Balladur is currently the favourite to be elected president, but he faces very strong competition from right-wing rivals such as Jacques Chirac. He has been criticised for suspending controversial issues until after the election, and his lead in the opinion polls is narrowing. The campaign has become extremely personalised, and this will not necessarily benefit him.
