Electronic shopping: set to transform retailing?

Article Abstract:

Electronic shopping does not mean buying by the Internet alone but it can also be applied to telephone ordering, TV shopping channels and interactive kiosks. Technical developments that are likely to improve the slow services of Internet shopping include spread of integrated service and data network telephony, adoption of the 56 kbps standards for modems and wider use of cable-based telecommunications. However, interests are focused not only on interactive television and Internet developments such as Internet TV but also on the potential of workplace shopping via company intranets.

Competition hots up in online bookselling...

Article Abstract:

Online book seller Amazon.com has introduced Web sites for the British and German markets. The company, which offers a broad range of titles, discounts and informative content, will likely occupy a competitive position in the book retailing business in the UK. However, a rival is challenging the potential dominance of Amazon.com. Bertelsmann intends to establish its own online bookselling business in the French, German, Benelux and British markets. It also acquired half of the shares in the online company Barnes and Noble.

...And spills over to online music

Article Abstract:

The emerging dominance by Amazon.com of the online music selling business has compelled niche companies CDnow and N2K to merge, helping them regain their leading position with a combined 45% share of the market and 1.2 million customers. The union would help cut costs accrued from such activities as marketing, distribution and technological development. The merged units will have to invest in a global distribution network and a digital distribution system that delivers music directly to computers to fortify their position.
