Endgame at the global slaughter house

Article Abstract:

The moratorium on commercial whaling agreed in 1982 has not served to prevent the continued decline in whale populations. However, there are signs that the International Whaling Commission may now be beginning to address this problem with renewed determination. The Irish Commissioner to the 49th meeting of the Commission will propose a global whale sanctuary outside countries' exclusive economic zones, a total ban on international trade, the phasing out of scientific whaling and limited controlled coastal whaling for domestic consumption within exclusive economic zones.

A new twist on the structure of DNA

Article Abstract:

Artist Mark Curtis has developed a model of DNA which modifies that presented by Crick and Watson in 1953. Curtis has joined the four base pair 'building blocks' to their respective complementary bases the opposite way round to the model presented by Crick and Watson. In this way, he has created two pentagons as the core axis of the double helix. Some scientists believe that his model is attractive but does not make any significant contribution to scientific study.

Chainsaw massacre? Not in Wisconsin

Article Abstract:

The Menominee Indian reservation in northern Wisconsin contains the only commercial timberland in the US to be certified as a sustainably managed forest. The forest contains large numbers of high-quality, mature growing trees, even though most of it has been logged twice over since the 1860s. Its success is attributable to a tribal ethic which highlights respect for nature and community, and to the use of extremely advanced forestry practices.
