Engineers are more than mechanics

Article Abstract:

The UK still has a shortage of engineers in the 1990's and their professional role is more respected as the use of technology increases in all employment areas. Engineers' skills include numeracy and problem solving. To ensure adequate staffing, employers sponsor one-third of final year engineering undergraduates. Higher numbers of students need to be attracted into engineering by raising the profile of the profession and its title 'Chartered Engineer', by recommending the career to women - in 1991 15% of engineering and technology graduates were female - and providing careers advisors with information.

Rendered speechless by competitors

Article Abstract:

More than 60% of 2,000 companies surveyed by the Institute of Employment Studies (IES) undertake business abroad in countries where English is not the first language, but many lack foreign language expertise. Many managers rely on the fact that their overseas contacts can speak English, but in fact a Eurobarometer survey shows that 58% of European Union residents are unable to speak English. There is still a severe lack of investment in language training in the workplace among UK companies.

Why these pupils love their masters

Article Abstract:

Some employers had started to see the Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree rather negatively, believing that it produced people well trained in business theory but with limited practical experience. However, the MBA is now regarded as a post-experience qualification, so people no longer take an MBA course immediately after graduation. This has led to a strong revival in international and domestic demand for MBA places.
