Entering a state of collaboration

Article Abstract:

The number of pharmacists who have successfully forged collaborative practice agreements with physicians is increasing. In this agreement, pharmacists are able to prescribe antibiotics, pain medications and contraceptives to patients. While not innovative in an institutional setting, it is an increasing trend in a community setting. The three elements of a successful collaborative practice agreement are sufficient training in certain diseases, an understanding that pharmacy services supplement and do not replace physician services, and well-defined goals.

Choosing oral contraceptives

Article Abstract:

Oral contraceptives have become the most popular therapy for reversible birth control. Contraceptives today are considered much safer because they contain lesser amounts of hormones. Utilization rates have remained high because contraceptives can be used to treat noncontraceptive conditions. Utilization, however, has been adversely affected by inconclusive results on studies of their benefits and risks. A discussion of the other potential uses of contraceptives, their hormonal components and procedures to prevent adverse side effects is presented.
