Era ends as Dounreay closes

Article Abstract:

Dounreay nuclear power station is to be decommissioned after an announcement by the UK Government. It was opened in 1953 to allow Britain to develop expertise in making commercial nuclear reactors. It used a "fast breeder" reactor which generated its own fuel but its use of expensive liquid sodium cooling systems meant it was uneconomic. The reactor was shut down in 1988 but reprocessing of nuclear fuel was carried on. The impact on Dounreay's workers will be minimal as it will take people to dismantle it which will last until 2095.

UK: COATS VIYELLA CEASES OUTPUT AT PLANT

Article Abstract:

Coats Viyella revealed on 22 March 2000 that output at its Londonderry shirt facility has been halted and that almost 400 jobs have been lost as a result. The UK-based textile group attributed the move to a reduction in orders for shirts and ties from Marks & Spencer, meaning that making the items in the UK was not economically viable.
