Europe's coming war over Cyprus

Article Abstract:

It is not completely impossible that there will be a major international conflict as a result of the rapidly worsening situation in Cyprus. Russia would come to the assistance of the Greek Cypriot government, and nuclear weapons would be brought into the area. It is already recognised that Turkey can be extremely stubborn on matters of national interest, and the international community must take this situation very seriously. Some observers believe that conflict may break out over other Greek-Turkish tensions, especially the disputed Aegean islands.

Talks aim to break Cyprus deadlock

Article Abstract:

The UK and US governments will play a key role in direct talks which are planned for spring 1997 between Greek Cypriot leader president Glafcos Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash. Neither side believes that the talks have much prospect of bringing a solution to the problems of Cyprus, which has been partitioned since 1974. The Greek Cypriots are threatening to demand that their part of the island enter the European Union if the negotiations make no progress.

Memory of 1974 keeps Cypriot peace deal grounded

Article Abstract:

Efforts by the European Union and the US to break the deadlock in Cyprus will encounter many barriers. It is widely agreed that the existing situation in Cyprus cannot be allowed to continue, but neither the Turkish government in the north nor the Greek Cypriot government in the south is prepared to make any concessions. There is growing international pressure for direct talks to take place in spring 1997 between the leaders of the two communities.
