Eve of victory

Article Abstract:

The camera seeks actuality more than truth, according to photographer Eve Arnold. She feels that the camera romanticizes because it isolates the image. She has gained great respect for her ability to communicate with the people she photographs, and is particularly well known for her photographs of Marilyn Monroe. She feels that all photographers are political agents, and that it is impossible for the photographer not to want to impose a viewpoint on the subject. An exhibition of her work is currently being held at the Scottish National Portrait Gallery in Edinburgh, Scotland.

A shot in the dark

Article Abstract:

Country life can be very limiting, while the city is full of endless possibilities, according to photographer Rut Blees Luxemburg. She moved to London, England, from the German countryside to study photography in 1990, and now finds interest in very unexpected city locations. Her photographs portray an eerie beauty, and their great ambivalence makes them very attractive. Her work is currently on display at the Laurent Delaye Gallery in London, England.

'You don't take a photograph, the photograph takes you.' (Eve Arnold on photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson)

Article Abstract:

Many people owe photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson a great debt, according to Eve Arnold, the first American woman to become a member of Magnum. His photographs can be regarded as a form of living history, and are an engagement with life, rather than abstractions of it. He has placed more emphasis on drawing and painting since the early 1970s, and often uses the same skills for these activities as he does for photography.
