Executive summary

Article Abstract:

The U.K.'s food retailing market is growing alongside the slow economic recovery. But the growing trend hides the rationalization within the market, with fewer, larger food retail outlets superceding smaller, independent stores. Consumer food expenditure has remained fairly static between 1990 and 1995 and is set to reach 42 billion pounds sterling in 1995. Markets with poor performances during the period include fish, meats, cake, flour, sweeteners and sugars, while growth has been encouraging in the fruit and vegetable markets. An analysis of the U.K. food retail market is presented.

Figures from the Family Expenditure Survey 1994-95 show that the average weekly expenditure per capita in the U.K. totals 116.95 pounds sterling. However, there are regional variations, with Greater London spending more and Wales spending less. Expenditure on food, drink and tobacco is affected by factors such as housing and travel expenses. A regional analysis of spending on food, drink and tobacco in the U.K. is presented.

The future

Article Abstract:

It is expected that food retailing in the U.K. will become more problematic for the smaller, independent retailers, with the number of specialists likely to fall. It is forecast that food sales will grow by 4% through to 2000, with food sales set to reach 45.22 billion pounds sterling by the end of the decade, against 44.12 billion pounds sterling in 1996.
