Extraordinary homes for ordinary folk

Article Abstract:

Newcastle has a generally very negative image, being associated with violence and decay. However, its city centre has many splendid Grade I and Grade II listed buildings, most of which are neo-Classical. The problem is that many are standing empty, indicating the general lack of initiative in the UK in dealing with historic buildings. This may be resolved with a partnership between Newcastle City Council, English Heritage and local business which is turning the buildings into flats which can be inhabited by people on a modest income.

Making a Mecca for the plane crazy

Article Abstract:

Construction work is to start shortly on the American Air Museum in Britain at Duxford, Cambridgeshire, which has been designed by Sir Norman Foster. He has been fascinated by flying for many years, and therefore feels particularly close links with the building he has designed. This will open in spring 1997, and will be part of the Imperial War Museum's existing centre of historic aviation.

A spot of Fifties spick and span

Article Abstract:

Coventry's city centre is largely made up of buildings erected relatively recently, but it is still quite attractive. No individual building is particularly interesting, but they form a pleasant whole. The focus is the cathedral, designed by Sir Basil Spence, and regarded as extremely modern when it was built.
