FDA restricts Trovan use

Article Abstract:

The FDA has imposed limits on the use of Pfizer Inc's antibiotic Trovan after receiving several reports of severe liver failure and death associated with using the drug. In a public health advisory, the agency warned physicians to prescribe the antibiotic only to patients suffering from the most serious infection. In response, Pfizer is relabeling both oral and intravenous forms of Trovan, indicating that it be used only in severe life- or limb-threatening cases.

NASA launches microcapsule test

Article Abstract:

The Microencapsulation Electrostatic Processing System (MEPS) was tested during the Discovery's STS-95 mission. The MEPS is a new method for encapsulating medicines to be used as a new drug delivery system for the treatment of tumors. The MEPS produces liquid-filled microcapsules filled with anti-cancer agents and lipiodol. The microcapsules are directed to an artery of a solid tumor, where they clog the capillary vessels, cutting off the tumor's blood supply.

Xenical approved for weight loss

Article Abstract:

Hoffman-LaRoche's weight loss drug called Xenical was approved in the US in May 1999. The drug works by preventing about 30% of dietary fat from being absorbed by the intestine and has been proven effective when taken in conjunction with a reduced-calorie diet. However, clinical trials also showed that Xenical partially depletes fat soluble vitamins A, D, E and K, and beta carotene. Thus, patients taking Xenical are advised to also take multivitamins.
