FSA is a poor 'adviser.'

Article Abstract:

The UK Financial Services Authority (FSA) is responsible for promoting an improvement in public understanding of the financial system. However, it is possible to raise doubts about the effectiveness of the five booklets recently published by the FSA, covering issues including pensions and Individual Savings Accounts. In 'Financial Advice,' the FSA provides correct factual information, but seems to present the wrong emphasis. In each case, these booklets encourage questions to be asked, but do not give any guidance about proceeding to the next stage.

How to avoid the second-year hitches

Article Abstract:

There are a number of basic principles that students can follow to ensure that they do not encounter serious financial difficulties. For those with credit card debt, it is worth paying this off as soon as possible, even if it means going overdrawn on a current account. If a credit card is used, then major purchases should be made at the beginning of the monthly account period, thus obtaining the maximum interest-free credit period. Banks offer concessionary borrowing rates to students, but only if an overdraft is arranged in advance.
