Issues raised by the introduction of the slimming drug sibutramine, marketed in the UK as Reductil, are discussed. Some observers believe that this drug will play a valuable role in tackling obesity-related conditions such as diabetes and arthritis. However, there are concerns about the restrictions on prescribing it, with patients only allowed to continue after four weeks if they have lost 2kg.
