Fela Kuti

Article Abstract:

Fela Kuti was a Nigerian popular singer who achieved fame world wide. He studied at Trinity College of Music, London, England and was also influenced by black American styles and jazz. He traveled to the US with his first band was the Koola Lobitos, in 1969, and became involved in black power politics. He later returned to Nigeria and recorded songs with a political and social content. There were reprisals from the authorities due to his criticisms, and his mother died after injuries sustained in a police raid. He later became concerned with spiritual rather than political issues, and died in Aug 1997.

Article Abstract:

The music of the village of Joujouka, situated some 100 km from Tangier, was probably first discovered by outsiders in the late 1940s, and was particularly popular during the hippy era of the 1960s. The music is now enjoying a revival, and some Joujouka musicians are currently touring Europe. A number of recordings have been made with famous musicians over the years, and a new record has recently been released.

Article Abstract:

Cartoons are extremely popular in France, where 225 million cartoon books are sold every year. The annual comic art festival in Angouleme, France, has a budget of 1.5 million pounds sterling, and the city is seen as the cartoon capital of France. The festival attracts more than 150,000 visitors, and many publishers and retailers have stands there. There are many exhibitions, and visiting artists sign books.
