Brutalist, original, but a slum

Article Abstract:

The Robin Hood Gardens housing estate in the London borough of Tower Hamlets, completed in 1972, is significant architecturally, being a prime example of Brutalism and having inspired many other housing estates. This has led some people to call for it to be listed. However, others believe that it should be demolished, as it is in a very poor state of repair.

Financial consultant makes money work for Pakistani slum-dwellers

Article Abstract:

Briton Stuart Rutherford established his SafeSave saving and borrowing scheme in the Beri Bad slum district of Dhaka, Pakistan, in 1996. Working with a local partner, Lipi Nurunaka, he offers local people the opportunity to save small sums of money or take out small loans. Local people are extremely poor, but default rates are very low. The scheme, run on a co-operative basis, is now covering its costs, and is expected to become self-supporting eventually.
