First, but not among equals

Article Abstract:

The Royal Academy in London, England, is currently staging an exhibition entitled 'Kandinsky: Watercolours and Other Works on Paper.' This is the first retrospective in the UK of the work of Russian artist Wassily Kandinsky. The first room of this exhibition gives an insight into how Kandinsky shifted towards abstract art in around 1910 to 1911, when he was in his mid-40s. Kandinsky's abstraction seems to have begun in confusion, and his works seem to lack the 'inner necessity' he regarded as the vital ingredient of art.

Manoeuvres in the dark

Article Abstract:

The Atlantis Gallery in London, England, is staging an installation by Scottish artist Douglas Gordon entitled 'Feature Film.' This installation is a tribute to the power of film music. It focuses in particular on the power of Bernard Herrmann's music for Alfred Hitchcock's film 'Vertigo.' The visitor is able to hear the music either as a form of orchestral performance or as a film soundtrack. This installation highlights the fact that film music can never really exist in its own right.

Almost black and white

Article Abstract:

The Serpentine Gallery in London, England, is staging an exhibition of the cartoons of South African artist William Kentridge. His works differ from ordinary animated drawing in that they use, in effect, a single image which is constantly changed. This means that the active figures do not have an independent mobile life. In terms of technique, his work is melancholy and serious, with a strong physical presence. There is extensive representation of violence.
