First private hospitals for NHS

Article Abstract:

The forthcoming Budget presented by chancellor Kenneth Clarke is expected to include measures which will permit plans for the private sector to design, finance, build and operate a hospital directly for the National Health Service to go ahead. This will allow Granada to invest 35 million pounds sterling in rebuilding a significant proportion of Wycombe and Amersham General Hospitals. The buildings will be financed and run by a private consortium, but medical care will continue to be provided by staff employed directly by the National Health Service.

Want to close the class gap? Try taxing the rich when they're dead

Article Abstract:

It is currently very easy to avoid paying inheritance tax in the UK. Chancellor Gordon Brown will not include measures in his forthcoming Green Budget to restrict inheritance tax loopholes, but may do so in his Budget in Mar 1998. It is widely acknowledged that inheritance tax is a vital element of a fair tax system. It can also be argued that the scope of inheritance tax should be widened and that schemes for tax avoidance should be eliminated.
