Five years for failed tycoon who built high street empire with 8.5m pounds sterling in dodgy loans

An Old Bailey judge has jailed businessman Stephen Hinchliffe and banker John Doherty for five years. It was established that Hinchliffe bribed Doherty to obtain 8.5 million pounds sterling in unsecured loans from United Mizrahi Bank.

Prescott urged to tear up rail map

Article Abstract:

UK Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott is to hold a railway summit on Feb 25, 1999, as part of his efforts to bring about significant improvements in the standard of rail services. He has already indicated that the emphasis of rail policy will shift towards passenger benefits, with services being regulated by a new Strategic Rail Authority. The government is prepared to be radical, possibly even going as far as replacing rail services with coach services.
