Five years of crossed lines at Cable & Wireless

Article Abstract:

The departure of Lord Young from telecommunications concern Cable and Wireless will have a particular impact at its Mercury operations. Mercury has had five chief executives in six years, and has been forced to restructure its operations, making redundancies and shutting down call boxes. Some observers believe that Mercury faced an impossible task in competing against British Telecom, while others claim that Mercury made a number of very serious mistakes.

Scholar with a foot in the real world

Article Abstract:

Many people see Cardinal Carlo Mario Martini, the Archbishop of Milan, as the most likely successor to Pope John Paul II. He is a highly respected Bible scholar, and has a very charismatic personality. He has campaigned on behalf of the homeless, immigrants and the unemployed, and has work hard to rid Italian politics of corruption. However, he is not much younger than the present Pope, and is also known to have some opponents.
