Focus on a double life

Article Abstract:

Photographer Catherine Yass, who has recently won the Glen Dimplex Artists' Award in Ireland, is now focusing on the uninhabited sites of human activity. These subjects are intended to invite the viewer into her work in a way she feels portraits are unable to do. She seeks to create empty psychological spaces into which viewers can project their own emotions. Her images are not clearly either reality or fiction, and viewers can find this uncertainty disturbing.
