Focus on good quality shares and you won't go too far wrong

Article Abstract:

City analysts are very divided about the future direction of share prices. Some feel that Wall Street is very overvalued on several measures, and that the Dow will very probably see a sharp correction in the near future. This will inevitably have an impact on stock markets in the UK. Others feel that an incoming Labour government in the UK will inherit a strong economy and will introduce a sharp rise in interest rates, thus limiting consumer spending. This will cut inflation and make the equity market look increasingly cheap, thus pushing it to new highs.

Hotels flotation signals early Lonrho break-up

Conglomerate concern Lonrho has announced plans to make an international public offering of shares in Princess Metropole Hotels. This deal, valued at 600-800 million pounds sterling, is part of a wider programme to break up Lonrho. It will almost completely eliminate Lonrho's debts, allowing it to go ahead with the sell-off of its food processing, agriculture and car distribution businesses. It is believed that Lonrho plans to separate its remaining mining and African trading operations shortly.
