For all our sophistication, we still instinctively trust our leaders

Article Abstract:

Many ordinary people are cynical about politics, but they still like to believe that politicians are honourable people. They accept that politicians sometimes make mistakes in their private lives, but still want politicians to be trustworthy. President Bill Clinton has exploited this bond of trust with ordinary people, and has redefined the meaning of trust to make his behaviour, including having affairs and twisting facts, acceptable. Questions of political trust are posed less dramatically in the UK, but are still very significant.

The Germans do not want to change, but they will

Article Abstract:

German society is still very conservative in nature. Daily life is highly ordered, which can have both positive and negative repercussions. Public attitudes towards issues such as extending shop opening hours are changing, and the constitution will eventually respond to this. However, this will require strong leadership and great determination, qualities Chancellor Gerhard Schroder has not yet portrayed.
