For the good of the country

Article Abstract:

The UK government should provide more funding to assist the many people who have not yet reached A-level standard qualifications, according to 'Learning Works,' the report from the committee headed by Helena Kennedy QC. If no further funding can be made available, then the government should target more of current further education funding towards people who find it hard to learn. These recommendations have been welcomed by further education college principals. However, those responsible for sixth form colleges fear that they could be negatively affected by a redistribution of further education funding.

Article Abstract:

It is becoming increasingly recognized that students at Oxford University, England, are placed under great psychological pressure to perform to very high standards. The university itself now acknowledges that students are under a lot of pressure, and has made efforts to establish a support system. Its students are among the most talented in the UK, but it has also gained a very negative reputation for its student suicide rate, with 12 students having committed suicide since 1990.

Progressive school baffled by inspectors' censure

Article Abstract:

Summerhill School, England, has been criticised by school inspectors and told to improve numeracy and literacy standards or be removed from a government list of approved schools. This would lead to closure. The school was set up by A.S. Neill, an educationalist, and is 76 years old. The inspectors focused on the ability of children at given ages, but children at the school, which uses progressive methods, often catch up before they take their examinations at 16-years-old.
