String quartet Kronos has gained a strong reputation for being distinctive and adventurous. It was established in 1973, and since then has been responsible for 400 new compositions for string quartet. It has become particularly well known for pieces commissioned from Philip Glass, Terry Riley, Witold Lutoslawski, Steve Reich and Henryk Gorecki. The quartet is performing three concerts in London, England, to mark its 25th anniversary. These will include collaboration with Romanian Gypsy band Taraf de Haidouks.

Southern comforts

Article Abstract:

Smithsonian Folkways Recordings holds the rights to one of the most extensive catalogues of world music and American roots traditions in the world, according to Tony Seeger, the label's curator. This made it very attractive to Microsoft, with which it has recently produced 'Crossroads: Southern Routes,' an 'enhanced CD' which is made up of music, historical pages, video clips and interviews with performers. The label aims to promote the music of small cultures which are often ignored by other labels.

The older generation game

Article Abstract:

Klezmer is Eastern European music with a Jewish flavour. It is currently undergoing a revival especially in the New York area. Klezmer arrived with Jewish emigration last century and subsequently took on an American identity, just as it had borrowed previously from traditional European folk music. A convention of klezmer music, called KlezKamp, is held in the Catskill Mountains in upstate New York.
