Kazakhs in thrall to a colonial past

Article Abstract:

Kazakhstan leaders are unsure of their policy since the country became independent by default. Its natural resources include oil, uranium and other rare metals which Moscow used to market. Its 17 million people, 40% of whom are Russian, inhabit a territory five times the size of France. It is the world's fourth biggest nuclear power, possessing 104 SS-18 missiles with over 1,000 nuclear warheads. The country is loyal to Moscow, in favour of the Commonwealth of Independent States and wary of Islamic extremes.

Where true democracy is the first casualty

Article Abstract:

There are many signs of political repression in Armenia as elections approach. Around 12 newspapers and news organisations have had their premises closed down, and some arrests have been made. Some observers believe that Armenia is now returning to communist practices.
