Free the teachers, they're better than their unions

Article Abstract:

It is possible to have grave concerns about the actions of the UK's National Association of Schoolmasters - Union of Women Teachers. Nigel de Gruchy, this union's General Secretary, has made a number of threats of industrial action by teachers, and seems unprepared to consider whether there are any positive aspects to the government's education policies. Most importantly, the union's stance is presented as if it is the stance of real teachers, when in fact it is not. It is vital that children do not fall victim to battles for union membership.

Mr Darling's holistic approach to social policy

Article Abstract:

UK Social Security Secretary Alastair Darling is seeking to present poverty as an issue to be addressed by all government departments and agencies, rather than just those concerned with welfare. Acknowledging that poverty is not merely a welfare issue is a significant psychological development, as it recognizes that a very wide range of government policies must work together to reduce poverty. He is also right to try to establish indicators of poverty, even though this approach could bring problems.

We need old Gradgrind back in our schools - at least for now

Article Abstract:

There is a need for a return to educational basics in the UK, thus ensuring that all children reach acceptable standards in reading, writing and mathematics. Within this context, a certain amount of homework is important. However, it is also important to draw up plans for a time when it will be possible to progress beyond the basics. In the longer term, education must encourage initiative and creativity.
