French lessons in school runs

Article Abstract:

Research indicates that a significant proportion of traffic congestion in the UK's cities and large towns is attributable to parents taking their children to school by car. It is worth encouraging families to consider whether their children could walk to school or go by bus, but it is also important to accept that this may not always be possible. For this reason, it may be better to adopt the French approach. There, school holidays are staggered, rather than all schools in a particular area having a holiday at the same time. This produces a significant reduction in traffic congestion.

The New Toryism as preached by Michael Portillo

Article Abstract:

Michael Portillo has been seeking an approach which could serve to revive the fortunes of the UK Conservative party. He has taken opposition to any moves towards European integration, an old theme, but has presented it in a new way, linking it with the UK's place in a world economy. He has been able to distance himself from the divisions within the party, and has put forward a vision of a new culture for the party. One possible role for the party could be a protector of individual rights against the Labour party's tendency towards corporatism.

Listen, Rachel. Science is for you, too

Article Abstract:

It can be very difficult to determine the exact role of science in public life. Politicians seek certainties from scientists, but few scientists are prepared to make definite pronouncements on sensitive issues. Politicians must therefore take probability into account, erring on the side of caution if the scientific evidence is not entirely clear. However, it is vital that the language of science is allowed to play an important role in public life.
