From Rome to Westminster

Article Abstract:

Some conservative Catholics have waived their customary discretion and drawn attention to the Catholic church by writing controversial articles. In May 1996, Alice Thomas Ellis complained about supporters of ecumenism and the fall in morality within the church. In late July 1996 William Oddie, a former Anglican, in the Catholic Herald, criticised the attitude of the Queen in calling for a divorce between Diana and Charles, Princess and Prince of Wales.

Do we do Christmas right?

Article Abstract:

Modern approaches to celebrating Christmas have become so embroiled in myths from various sources that it has become impossible to focus on the genuine origins of Christmas. There are many different kinds of religious belief and unbelief in modern society, and it is very hard to incorporate them all into Christmas celebrations. Against this background, it may be best simply to regard Christmas as a festival of hope marking the beginning of a new year.

The Devil still has the best tune

Article Abstract:

The recent attempt by the UK Conservative party to demonise Labour party leader Tony Blair reflects the modern obsession with evil. Popular culture contains many images which depend on the power of the Devil, and the Conservative party seems to be attempting to exploit this. People have always feared the power of the Devil, but in the past they felt reassured that the power of God would protect them. This is no longer the case in modern society.
