Garbage in, garbage out

Article Abstract:

Dr William Rathje, an anthropology professor, runs the Garbage Project inTucson, Arizonainspecting rubbish to discover information about American health, environment and rubbish problems. The project has established that although people ate less red meat many changed to sausages and salami which contained more fat than the original cuts of meat. Fast-food packaging and disposable nappies are expected to make up a large proportion of litter; in fact the project found under 0.1% was fast food packaging and under 1% was disposable nappies. Half the garbage was paper and next was building lumber. Increased recycling, particularly of newsprint is good garbage management.

Great Game is afoot again as rivals carve up an oil bonanza

Article Abstract:

There is considerable international tension surrounding the extraction of oil from the Caspian basin, where there could be 178 billion barrels of oil. The main area of conflict is transporting the oil from the Caspian basin, which is land-locked, and into a region where there is considerable unrest. There are now five consortia operating in the Caspian basin, involving 11 countries. These countries are likely to oppose any outside attempt to interfere with Azerbaijan, where the oil is to be brought ashore.
