There has been extensive media criticism of the way in which the police have handled the investigation into the murder of television presenter Jill Dando on Apr 26, 1999. Journalists have accused Scotland Yard of failing to hold enough press briefings and to issue reliable information. In turn, Scotland Yard has stated that theories about this case devised by journalists have been damaging the inquiry, deflecting police attention from the most important issues. This case has highlighted the delicate balance between crime reporting and policing.
