Getting the hang of Kelly

Article Abstract:

The Tate Gallery in London, England, is currently holding a retrospective of the work of US artist Ellsworth Kelly. The visitor enters directly into severe colour grids, and this can make it very hard to focus on the colour and form relationships of individual abstractions. The climax of the exhibition, which is made up of a set of five differently shaped 'Curves' from 1996, would be extremely impressive if it were not for the fact that a third wall is hung with a large bronze piece which is very horizontal in form.

Five steps to married bliss

Article Abstract:

The key elements in a happy marriage are focus, protection, pleasure, gratitude and balance, according to psychologist and psychotherapist Dr Janet Reibstein. All these elements must be present if a marriage is not to fail. She believes that happy couples place protection of each other at the centre of their lives, going against the popular view that adults should not depend on each other. Modern society emphasises independence, and this causes couples to grow apart.

Artist Roy Lichtenstein studied in 1940 under Realist painter Reginald Marsh at the Art Students League. He then undertook military service in Europe, and later taught at Ohio State University. He was determined to establish a presence in an art scene dominated by Abstract Expressionism, and gained a strong reputation for his use and adaptation of graphic design within a fine-art context. He mainly worked in primary colours, using clean, bright shapes.
