Those who suffer a financial disaster can be left to deal with the repercussions of that disaster for many years. It is not uncommon, for example, for mortgage lenders in the UK to seek to recover shortfalls on negative equity from borrowers five or six years after a property has been repossessed. In some cases, financial disaster can result from bureaucratic error, which can cause serious problems with apparently very simple transactions. Insurance companies and other financial institutions can sometimes create a very poor impression through simple incompetence.

Article Abstract:

A Personal Equity Plan (PEP) offers an efficient way of ensuring that unit trust savings are protected from being taxed, but many savers are failing to take up this opportunity. It is possible to invest up to 6,000 pounds sterling a year in a PEP, making this investment product very suitable for the average unit trust investor, who has a holding of only 4,649 pounds sterling. Failing to buy trusts through a PEP, rather than directly, means that the investor unnecessarily pays income and capital gains tax on savings.

Financial services companies have become very experienced in appealing directly to ordinary people, particularly in terms of linking responsibility for children with responsibility for financial matters. They are also seeking to make their advertising appeal more directly to women.
