Giants who dictate diet of the nation

Article Abstract:

Leading supermarkets have played a key role in boosting the quality of food sold in the UK. However, their strong emphasis on quality means that they are increasingly turning away from UK suppliers. They bring in large amounts of food from abroad, and this means that it is more common for food to be treated with chemical preservatives. Furthermore, the growing importance of supermarkets within food retailing has meant that the number of specialist food retailers has declined. There are now fewer than 4,000 master bakers in the UK, for example, from more than 12,000 in the 1950s.

The man who's selling Diana to the people

Article Abstract:

The Spencer family is not running the museum in memory of Diana, Princess of Wales, at Althrop Park, where she is buried, as a profit-making venture, according to Dave Brett, founder of Way Ahead, the largest ticket agency in British ownership. This company was selected as the agent with the sole rights to sell all the tickets to the museum. It sold 140,000 of the 152,000 tickets within four days, but almost 8,000 remain unsold. Brett believes that this is because the Spencer family does not wish to advertise the museum, thus making it a commercial venture.

Welsh roars of protest as census ignores a nation

Article Abstract:

There have been strong protests in Wales about the fact that the 2001 Census does not allow people to declare their ethnicity as Welsh, although those who regard themselves as Scottish or Irish can identify themselves as such. Arrangements for conducting the census are discussed.
