Article Abstract:

A public inquiry is to open in Sep 1995 into plans by UK Nirex, the UK nuclear industry's waste disposal company, to bury radioactive waste arond 600 mt underground at Longland's Farm, near the Sellafield reprocessing plant in west Cumbria. There are already indications that the inquiry will not be undertaken properly, especially as the government has refused to provide adequate funding. The government has adopted a very arrogant attitude towards the concerns of people who live nearby, and has shown little understanding of the science involved.

Not just any old dump will do

Article Abstract:

Mr Michael Folger, managing director of UK Nirex, the nuclear waste disposal firm, said in Jul 1992 that Nirex would be examining the hydrogeology of a site near Sellafield, Cumbria, England for another year. More test boreholes were needed to give adequate information before the company was sufficiently confident to apply for planning permission for a repository 800 metres deep. The original date of commencing deposits in 2005 would be delayed as much engineering work still had to be done.

Invasions from outer space

Article Abstract:

Astronomers in the US have recently discovered glycine, an amino acid which is one of the key building blocks of organic life, in the constellation of Sagittarius. This is the first sub-unit of protein to have been discovered in outer space, and will renew the debate about where and how life began. Some researchers now think that life began in outer space, rather than on the earth.
