Article Abstract:
The pureness of the treble voice has long been prized in church choral music since composers began utilising them at the end of the 15th century. In the renaissance period boys' voices did not break until they were 17 or 18 years old and even up to the end of World War II the age was 15 to 16. This meant there was time to obtain considerable musical education and sophistication. Now that choirboys' voices break at around 13 they cannot reach the musical expertise of their forerunners. The choir of King's College, Cambridge produces a sound that others try to emulate.

Going the extra Maal

Sengalese singer and musician Baaba Maal and his group Daande i enol gave a quality performance at Paris's Elysee Montmartre, as if they were in a village in Senegal. Dancing and drumming are important to this musical style, which is called Yela. World music seeks to demonstrate modernity, not the ethnic angle. Athletic, glamorous Baaba Maal studied music in Dakar and at the Conservatoire in Paris. Mango Records organised strategic shows and re-mixing of recordings to suit American and European audiences.
