Goodbye to the golden calf

Article Abstract:

Music can play a key role in reclaiming spiritual values, according to London Symphony Orchestra Principal Conductor Sir Colin Davis. He has chosen to open the orchestra's new season with Bruckner's Sixth Symphony, which he regards as a beautiful yet undervalued work. He finds Bruckner's music challenging, as it involves dealing with very large blocks of sound. He feels that this orchestra has a very different approach to Bruckner from that of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, where he spent some time as chief conductor.

The Danish invasion

Article Abstract:

The work of several Danish composers is being featured during the 1999 Proms season. These composers include Carl Nielsen, whose works include 'Springtime on Funen' and 'Aladdin Suite,' and Poul Ruders. The latter's 'Gong' will be performed on Aug 11, 1999. Symphonist Rued Langgaard has until recently received very little attention, but the local Danacord CD label has now begun to revive his work. A Langgaard series is also planned by the DaCapo label.

At the age of enlightenment

Article Abstract:

The members of the London Philharmonia Orchestra work extremely hard, according to conductor Kurt Sanderling, who is rehearsing the Second Symphony by Sibelius with this orchestra. He feels that his age, 87, gives him an advantage over younger conductors, as it takes many years for conductors to develop a genuinely individual approach. He officially retired in his 60s, but continues to derive great pleasure from conducting the standard repertoire.
