He didn't see this one coming

Article Abstract:

Microsoft founder Bill Gates has always placed strong emphasis on public relations. Indeed, at the time of the launch of Windows 95 Microsoft had between 400 and 500 public relations executives, most of them at Waggener Edstrom. Gates has always regarded himself as the embodiment of the Microsoft brand, and he devotes 15% of his time to media affairs. However, public perception of Microsoft began to deteriorate in 1994, when Gates abruptly left an interview after unscripted questions were asked. Since that time, the company's public relations function has come under great pressure, particularly because of allegations of anti-competitive practices.

Reno charges Microsoft with acting illegally

Article Abstract:

The US Justice Dept has linked with 20 states to launch lawsuits against Microsoft Corp. It is alleged that this company has exploited its near-monopoly position. The US courts will now consider whether to grant a request to oblige Microsoft to loosen its contractual deal with manufacturers of personal computers licensed to install Windows. Microsoft could also be forced either to include the Netscape Navigator on its new Windows 98 operating platform or remove Explorer from Windows 98.

AOL's talks with Netscape fuel battle for cyberspace

Article Abstract:

Internet access provider America Online is planning to purchase browser pioneer Netscape Communications. If this deal goes ahead, there could be significant repercussions for Microsoft, which could face competition from a powerful new alliance. There could also be serious implications for the US government's legal action against Microsoft, which may be able to claim that its aggressive and allegedly illegal business practices are no different from those of its rivals.
