Mandelson returns from exile as Blair says 'he's paid his price.'

Article Abstract:

A Cabinet reshuffle implemented by UK Prime Minister Tony Blair involves Peter Mandelson replacing Mo Mowlam as Secretary of State for Northern Ireland. Mowlam has been appointed the Cabinet's 'enforcer,' while Alan Milburn has become Secretary of State for Health, Geoff Hoon has become Secretary of State for Defence and Andrew Smith has become Chief Secretary to the Treasury. Blair believes that Mandelson has been sufficiently punished for the scandal over his 373,000 pounds sterling home loan.

He was ordered to be invisible for a year. He did it, but it wasn't easy

Article Abstract:

Peter Mandelson, who resigned as UK Secretary of State for Trade and Industry in Dec 1998 following a scandal over his acceptance of a 373,000 pounds sterling home loan from former Paymaster General Geoffrey Robinson, did not have to remain in political exile for long. Indeed, he has now been appointed Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, a reflection of his political abilities and his closeness to Prime Minister Tony Blair. He was aware that he needed to keep a low profile in order to avoid further damage to his reputation, but found this difficult.
